March 2016 Stars Update

Well it’s been a very exciting March! Elizabeth Bluemle posted about the Starred Reviews Spreadsheet over at ShelfTalker on the Publishers Weekly site. Elizabeth’s list of starred reviews that she posted quarterly is one of the things that inspired me to start my own spreadsheet all the way back in 2011 so it was pretty amazing to see my own name on her blog! Her post mentioned sorting by publisher so I’m working on adding publisher information to the 2016 spreadsheet, but it may be awhile until I get everything updated so please note that’s a work in progress. I’m also new to sorting out publisher vs. imprint stuff so let me know in the comments if you see an inaccuracy (particularly if you’re from the publisher!).

Here’s the other excitement: We have our first 5 star books! But first, a rundown of the stats for the year so far:

  • 690 stars have been awarded to 437 books
  • 2 books have 5 stars, 20 books have 4 stars, 41 books have 3 stars, 103 books have 2 stars, 271 books have 1 star
  • Breakdown of the 690 stars by journal: Booklist 129; Bulletin 18; Horn Book 15; Kirkus 225; PW 176; SLJ 127.
  • The Bulletin is the holdout for both of our 5 star books, but their reviewing schedule tends to run towards the later end so stars for these two could still be coming! (In fact, I peeked at the April Bulletin and at least one will be moving into the 6 star category next month…….)

Without further ado may I present the 2 books which have received 5 starred reviews:
